I saw an image in a National Geographic magazine of a child carrying, what appeared to be, textiles on his head. Of course, I was instantly attracted, and as I looked closer at the colorful bundle, I was alarmed and fascinated by the mass of electronics, circuit boards and copper wires -- the stuff called "e-waste".
This child lives on a dumpsite collecting bundles of e-waste that will be burned for the metals that can be collected. This is a very toxic and potentially deadly job.
Electronic waste, wrongly handled, has devastating effects; these children are often using the same pot they cook their food in to melt down the metals they collect.
Huge amounts, about 40 million tons of computers, TVs, V.C.R.s, monitors, cell phones, and other equipment, is discarded and finds its way to the developing world.
As the volume of electronic waste continues to grow worldwide, so does the need for humane and environmentally sound ways to deal with the wealth of materials needing to be recycled.
