One Grandchild at a Time

Title: Grandmothers to Grandmothers

On my way home from our Go Grannies group meeting, I thought of the idea for fund raising quilt. I wanted a Canadian grandmother and an African grandmother side by side with a landscape background.

As the idea developed, the landscape became a view of Africa inside a heart shape and a view of coastal B.C. above the heart.

I found faces that I thought represented the vision I had of the piece. Then I developed the surrounding blocks. I used a schoolhouse block, a barn block, and a house block to reference the importance of the fundamentals of community.

I found an image I called“the walking child” which I spread out over the quilt. Each child is different. Some are bold and some are harder to see. Some are dark and some are light. They are walking different ways but all are going somewhere and they will need help on their journey.

I included the hands shaking in agreement and cooperation to symbolize the mission of the Go Grannies group. I painted several children, some white and some black, and printed the paintings onto cloth to include in the quilt.

Children all over the world need the same things– love and a safe place to grow up with the basics of survival provided. Those children in the quilt represent that idea.
