Title: Counting Herself Last
Because the AIDS pandemic has caused so much illness and sent millions of parents to an early grave, many African grandmothers have become the sole caregivers for millions of orphaned children in Africa.
This grandmother has given up her bed and the protection of the malaria net. When there is not enough food, she will go hungry so the growing children can eat. Every penny she manages to earn is put aside for school fees and uniforms.
The symbol on the wall above the sleeping grandmother is 'Eban', meaning 'fence', a West African symbol for love, safety and security ... everything this grandmother has become to these children.
