One Note at a Time
Title: When Words Fail
The inspiration for our piece was the Music Therapy Community Clinic, South Africa (Stephen Lewis Foundation newsletter, summer 2009, "When Words Fail"), where therapists use music to help heal children traumatized by the effects of AIDS on their families.
The story of one young boy in particular, touched us deeply. Therapists used music and drumming to help Thabo, who was 4 years old, and traumatized by his mother's death. He is transformed from a terrified, kicking, screaming child into one whose face is lit up with delight when he hears the music.
As music is an important part of our lives, we felt drawn to illustrate this small transformation of a quiet, somber figure into one of exuberance, joy and delight, all through the power of music.
