Title: A Door for My House
Twelve Ugandan widows, members of the Bitengye Designers, inspired this piece.
It is their courage, their strength, and their determination to learn new skills that is improving their own lives and the lives of their families.
The centre block features Alice, the Ugandan tailor, who is the Coordinator of the group – she is teaching the women how to thread a treadle sewing machine.
The outside blocks illustrate some of the ways the women have spent their earnings: food for their families, land on which to grow corn or bananas, chairs, tables, and beds, a cow, goats, medicine, school fees, and for Recheal, one of the Ugandan widows, a door for her house.
